Review

The Accursed starts off with a bang. Curses, black magic, double crossings and wild performances. It reminded me quite a bit of Drag Me to Hell and I was hoping for that kind of energy all the way through the film but unfortunately it really never matched that beginning.

Director Kevin Lewis directs the film well and with Cinematographer David Newbert there are some great shots especially considering that this was a smaller budget film. A lot of the atmosphere begins from Newbert’s framing and lighting. Èmoi’s score elevates the films visuals imbuing them with a creepy and menancing tone.

All the main players do a fine job, even if the writing is clunky. The film has a lot of good elements, it is well made, well directed and well acted but unfortunately, they don’t make up for the writing in the end. However, the third act provides some (jump) scares but unless you are a horror newbie (and if you are – welcome and go watch more films!) You’ll know where this is heading well before the credits roll.

The Accursed is out now on VOD and Digital platforms.
