DreamWorks unveiled the official trailer for their new animated series, Trollhunters, for Netflix at New York Comic Con. Created by Guillermo del Toro, the man who gifted us with films such as Pan’s Labyrinth and The Devil’s Backbone, Trollhunters is the second series based on one of his books. The audience was also treated to a screening of the first two episodes of the series.
Jim Lake, a teen with a somewhat unconventional home life and who is a bit of a misfit at school, longs for excitement and adventure. One morning, on the way to school, he discovers an amulet that soon catapults him into the secret world of trolls. Jim is the first human to be chosen as the Trollhunter and he is sworn to protect good trolls, as well as humans, from the vengeful trolls who seek to destroy anyone who gets in their way.
If you’re familiar with del Toro’s work, you know his creativity has no limits. This is no exception. Geared toward a younger audience, with a more comedic framework, it still exhibits the same magic you’ve come to expect from the soft-spoken writer/director. The show, while fantasy, touches on many things very relatable to kids and adults, such as single parenthood, bullying, struggling in school, and wanting more out of life.
Jim is voiced brilliantly by the late Anton Yelchin, to whom the series is dedicated. It was nothing short of heartbreaking to hear his voice, knowing if the series continues, it will do so without him.
Trollhunters will run 26 episodes and premieres December 23, 2016 on Netflix.
