REVIEW

Everyone Will Burn was not the film I was expecting. An apocalypse thriller that begins almost midway through the timeline that you would normally find with this genre of film, with a fully-fledged supernatural powered small girl and plenty of ominous foreshadowing.

Maria Jose (Gomez) Is standing on the edge of the wall of a bridge with only one thing on her mind. A small girl (Garcia) appears behind her, muddied and mute, Maria Jose grabs the girl to take her to the next town over and hand her into the police so they can find her parents. On the way there she is pulled over by the police for a faulty taillight and the small girl does something to both the policemen, something that can’t be rationally explained. Meanwhile, the local church and its superstitious village, start to see some signs that the often referred to apocalypse is nigh and so Maria Jose will have to decide whether or not to protect the girl or hand her over.

Everyone Will Burn is in the Anti-Christ subgenre, yet Hebrero plays it against type, giving us The Omen without the lead-in and the film is all the better for it. He paints a picture of village so crazed in superstitions that the convincing the villagers have to do is not to find and kill this girl but to not jump to conclusions and be so religiously bigoted. The film is shot beautifully, the images created are vivid with great use of light and colour.

Garcia, on debut no less, is fantastic as the supernatural girl that will usher in the apocalypse, whilst Gomez brings her brand of madness to the role of Maria Jose, the way she uses her facial expressions makes her so much fun to watch, she occasionally veers closely to the edge of soap opera but makes to never tip over into it. Director Hebrero keeps the films tone serious, and this is another good choice, if it was played with some intentional comedy, it would almost come off as campy, but the serious tone is the right one and the film rises on that choice.

Everyone Will Burn is a fun and enjoyable thriller that plays with the tropes and keeps being creative. With some great set pieces and kills, this is definitely one to check out.
