Watching the trailer for Death of a Unicorn without any outside knowledge, you’d be lulled into thinking that it was just going to be a quirky comedy. A father and his daughter drive out to meet his billionaire boss but accidentally hit a unicorn on the way. Craziness ensues, and funny quips are made.
Death of a Unicorn decides to take a very different approach, though. Instead, the comedy makes way for some creature feature-style horror. As it goes Paul Rudd seems to be quite keen on comedy horror these days, coming into this flick after featuring in the return of a certain ghost-busting film series twice this decade.
Rudd will be joined by fan-favorite Jenna Ortega, as well as the ever-reliable Richard E. Grant, Will Poulter, and Téa Leoni. Emphasizing that Death of a Unicorn will pivot from comedy to horror, horror master John Carpenter provides the score for this one.
In the story, as the trailer shows, the somewhat standard desire of the rich folk to harvest and experiment on the felled unicorn leads to unintended and deadly consequences. It seems as though none of them think to consult the unicorn’s rather angry, sharp-toothed mate before chopping it up in the name of science.
It’s a very A24-kind of film, coming in with a novel idea for a one-off story that’s able to draw in more than its fair share of big-name actors. When it arrives on March 28, 2024, we’ll get to see what happens when a unicorn seeks revenge against the rich and entitled, and just how scary these mythical beasts can be.
Is There Any Precedence for an Evil Unicorn Rampage?
It’s not uncommon in the horror genre for creatives to take something seemingly innocuous or that’s perceived to be purely good-spirited and turn it evil. Fairies, toy dolls, and even Winnie-the-Pooh have been subject to this just over the last few years in The Watchers, M3gan, and Blood and Honey. Still, unicorns are different.
Of all of the creatures in the mythical lexicon of the world, unicorns might just be the most renowned as symbols of purity, light, and good. Unicorns are quite famously known for being powerful and peaceful in stark contrast to all of the other mythic creatures that seek to trick or harm humans.
In old tales, creatures and beasts of myth were used as vehicles of lessons so that people would have a good reason to steer clear of dangers or be able to place blame when tragedies occur. Unicorns are known as being superb at evading capture, and whilst fierce, would rather flee than fight.
All of this combined, it’s understandable that unicorns are held up as the purest of mythical beings. It’s why in modern media, they’re often depicted as being bright white with a flowing mane, hidden in the forest but never far from the most colorful rainbow ever seen.
This depiction of unicorns is well-known – their mysticism and grandeur keeps them as hot picks across media, including in other arenas of entertainment like casino games.
The arena of online and mobile slots is very competitive. Mobile slots, for example, have to be optimized to fit the small screen while also being enough of a draw thematically and mechanically to get taps. On top of this, platforms will carry colossal, ever-updating libraries of games. Among the hundreds of slots at the top recommended casino apps for real money, the unicorn slots remain very popular.
Unicorn Reels, Wild Unicorns, and Unicorn Legend all play into the classic depiction of the unicorn. With the latter offering bets as low as $0.01 per spin, they’re also very accessible slots, which is helped by the welcoming and relaxing theme. Of course, it’s not just in slots that this is seen.
Films like Legend (1985) and even Harold & Kumar (2008) feature the classic style of unicorn. In 1982’s superb sci-fi thriller Blade Runner, unicorns are deployed in a more subtle way.
Unicorns have been used as a symbol of mystery, power, and purity across entertainment media for decades. In 2025, Death of a Unicorn will turn these iconic creatures into vengeful killing machines. Should be good fun!
