TV Review – Bates Motel Season 2, Episode 7

Normal bates

Steve Taylor-Bryant checks back in to Bates Motel and reviews ‘Presumed Innocent’…

After the death of Cody’s father at the end of last week’s episode, this week slowed the pace back down as we see Cody and Norman being questioned by Sheriff Romero. Norma is purposely kept out of the conversation and the fact she appears to be losing her grip on Norman is still one of the most interesting parts of a show that has always been heavy on characterisation. We see Norman as the terrified, tortured soul that he is and as a vulnerable young man, giving Sheriff Romero the chance to show he has more to his character than we thought, coming across as a man with a big heart who genuinely wants to help.

This seemed a very low key episode, understandable as we build towards the season finale but nothing much of note happened, except the one thing but we’ll get to that in a moment. The drug gang storyline is now becoming tedious. It is taking away all the show’s previous efforts at Dylan’s portrayal and the story line appears to be going round in circles.

But that one thing? The reveal that Norman’s D.N.A was found in Blair during autopsy along with someone else’s. That shows Norman was there, which we know, and we also know he blacked out whilst Blair was trying to seduce him. It doesn’t however prove that Norman was responsible.

A treading water episode unfortunately.
