Short films, especially scary ones and especially those that clock in at under four minutes have to create and maintain the right atmosphere for the full run time. Where Is It does this by using new technology and an age old fear.
Writers and directors Todd Spence and Zak White have created a fun and scary short. What starts off as a video call about house sitting between Em (Gries) and Tara (Springer) quickly gets frightening as Tara sees that Em is not alone in the house. With great use of the new horror trope – intermittent internet signal – and the question you always ask yourself when you are home alone – ‘Is there someone else here?’ – Where Is It is a fantastic and well planned short film.
Gries and Springer manage to capture the fear and panic required, with mainly just their voices. These two go all in and help create the right atmosphere. Spence and White use the video chat/phone outward and inward facing cameras to good effect, making the audience unsure as to what is coming next.
You should seek out Where Is It for a tasty, bite sized chunk of scary.
