REVIEW

As AI begins to inundate our social media and a few billionaires decide what we should be
consuming on Tik Tok and Instagram, Every Heavy Thing feels especially timely. Set at the last alt-weekly publication still in operation, Joe (Josh Fadem) is an ad-seller who lives a boring, easy going life and he seems to be more than pleased with this. He’s just a dude who is friendly with the local liquor store owner, gets along with his parents, has a quirky girlfriend and hangs out with the one guy in the office that no one else wants to.

Joe is just cruising through life with a dry sense of humor and then one night he crosses pathswith the serial killer that has been tormenting the women in town. What transpires after this is exactly the kind of weirdness that one would expect from writer/director Mickey Reece. Various storylines intersect with one another against the backdrop of a serial killer mystery that is also
a commentary on modern technology. Set in a strangely low-tech world, the story contains
multiple high-tech threats that all feel eerily plausible in the near future.

Every Heavy Thing is difficult to sum up without ruining the absolute wackadoo plot. Reece and his cast have come together to make something truly unique. Fadem, especially, elevates the story by playing Joe as someone who is unserious and earnest at the same time. It doesn’t all work, though: the gratuitous nudity just feels tacky and the small budget definitely makes you second guess some of the artistic and effects choices, but overall, it does make you think. A little bit dark comedy, a titch of Giallo, a heavy dose of big tech paranoia and a couple of truly
strange throwaway bits coming back in the final moments to bring everything together all make for a cinematic experience that you definitely won’t forget any time soon.
